What is a C.B.T course?

Compulsory basic training (CBT) is a course you usually have to take before you ride a moped or motorcycle on the road.

The aim of the training is to ensure you can ride safely on your own and also allows you to improve your skills without instuction. You may also take part in lessons for your full moped or motorcycle test.

After you’ve completed the CBT, you can ride a:

  • moped if you’re 16 or over

  • motorcycle up to 125cc and with a power output of up to 11kW if you’re 17 or over

You must ride with L plates (L or D plates in Wales).

However it is only valid for two years. So you would need to complete another CBT to continue riding, Pass your motorcycle test or stop riding when the CBT expires.

Can I fail a C.B.T?

C.B.T. course is not a test so its not a case of pass or fail.

However a minimum standard must be obtained with progress being made. Also a basic understanding of the highway code is essentail.

What is involved?
